Rajahmundry is a city and a First municipal corporation in East Godavari district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Located on the holy banks of River Godavari. It is known as cultural capital of Andhra Pradesh as it has a rich cultural past with a flourishing present and a promising future. According to 2011 census, it is the seventh most populous city in Andhra Pradesh with population of 343,903 and the urban agglomeration population is 478,199. Rajahmundry is the biggest City in East Godavari District and It is a Divisional Headquarters. Howrah - Chennai railway line passes through the town longitudinally and has two railway stations namely Rajahmundry Railway Station (RJY) and Godavari Railway Station. Road cum Rail Bridge was constructed on river Godavari linking Kovvur and Rajahmundry is considered to be an engineering feat. It is Asia's Second largest Road cum Rail Bridge. Rajahmundry railway station is the biggest and main junction between Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam and is having good railway connectivity of major cities in all over India. The city is connected with all centers of the state with motorable roads, loacted on National Highway 560 K.M away from Chennai and 500 K.M from Hyderabad and having Flight connectivity to Hyderabad and Chennai.
The city is known to be the cultural capital of Andhra Pradesh and is notable for its ancient Vedic culture. The city was said to have been founded by the Chalukyas in the 11th century. However it has been disputed by many historians and archeologists who claim that the town existed before the rule of the Chalukyas. Rajahmundry is also known to be the birth place of the Telugu language. The river Godavari is the major attraction in this town and various parks and ghats are located by its banks. The boat cruises on the river are also an activity that shouldn’t be missed. The town being an ancient one is also famous for its ancient Dravidian Hindu temples that are frequented by tourists from all around.
Founded in the 19th century by Chalukya king Raja Raja Narendra after whom it was named Rajamahendri or Rajamahendravaram but now is known as Rajahmundry. It is the biggest city of East and West Godavari district and is the birth place of the 'Telugu' language. This city is also famously called the 'Cultural Capital' of Andhra Pradesh.

One may find numerous shops selling traditional wears and few selling western wears. Rajahmundry is well known as the second largest cloth market in India. The hand woven cloth or the famous khadi or cotton cloth can be easily purchased from Khadi Gram-udyogs and Khadi Bhandars. There are huge number of cooperative handloom houses where the variety of designer sarees with beautiful borders, ranging from cotton to silk are available.
